Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
