Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using these drugs need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
